Job Description

Title:  Driver – Seasonal (Includes Shuttle)                               
Position reports to: Driver Supervisor
Position Purpose:

This position is responsible for safely transporting various cargos for the Seasonal Terminals under the direction of the Driver Supervisor. All work is to be done in a safe, efficient and profitable manner. This person must demonstrate integrity, heritage, fairness, quality, and community service in the performance of one’s functions and responsibilities.

Essential Functions:

  • Pick up and deliver loads as per the schedule set up by the Driver Supervisor or Dispatcher.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and communication with our customers & co-workers.
  • Maintain a neat and clean personal appearance.
  • Supply Driver Supervisor with ample field information such as loaded and empty trailer count and harvest times.
  • Perform a complete and thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspection(s) before/after each load; submit completed DVIR’s to dispatch in a timely manner to assure a safe and effective fleet.
  • Keep truck cleaned, fueled, and check fluids, belts, tires, etc. before leaving the yard. Check trailer tires, brakes, seals, and tomato doors before leaving the yard.
  • Properly secure equipment (such as trucks, trailers, tarps, etc.) and cargo using company approved securement procedures/tools.
  • Properly document all driving and non-driving time and approve daily as required under FMCSA regulations; maintain logs, electronically or on paper as required.
  • Properly document and turn in all paper work (freight bills, logs, fuel, and toll receipts, field tags, hourly pay forms, and any citations or inspections) at the end of each shift.
  • Attend safety meetings quarterly.
  • Report to work as scheduled and work through the end of DOT allowable hours of service or until dispatcher/driver supervisor indicates it is the end of your work day; Schedule all appointments or requests for time off according to policy and in advance with your Driver Supervisor, using appropriate company forms/procedures.
  • Adhere to company policies, procedures and safety regulations. Use all safety equipment and safety clothing as required or as necessary for safe operations. Report any unsafe acts or conditions. Inquire in a timely manner about safe work procedures when in doubt about any situation or condition; follow guidance provided by driver supervisor, safety personnel, or others responsible for safety related issues.
  • Maintain regular and consistent attendance as scheduled. Must be able to work all hours and any shift up to the FCSA allowable hours in a 7 day work week and as allowed under state, federal or local law.
  • Perform all other duties as may be assigned.

Position Specifications

Education:

  • High School diploma, GED or trade school equivalent.
  • Must demonstrate English language skills at the level sufficient to understand and follow directions and to communicate with customers, law enforcement and others as needed to perform essential duties.

Technical Training:

  • Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with all co-workers, customers and the general public.
  • Valid Class A California License with doubles endorsement and an acceptable DMV print out (Shuttle Driver Class C).
  • Class A must be qualified to haul interstate loads.
  • Meets Company driver hire and retention guidelines.

Experience:

  • Prefer minimum two (2) year AG or Freight driving experience.
  • Must be 22 years old or older.

Work Environment:

  • Field environment with exposure to adverse weather conditions including heat, cold, wind, rain, dust, dirt and uneven ground.
  • Exposure to high volume traffic including congestion and high speed traffic on roads and highways.

Physical / Mental  Abilities:

  • Self-motivated and detail oriented; work with minimum supervision.
  • Required to sit, stand, walk and reach with hands and arms.
  • Frequently lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must have ability to occasionally lift up to 100 lbs.
  • Must use hands for repetitive simple grasping, pushing, pulling and fine manipulation.
  • Must use feet for repetitive movement when operating equipment controls.
  • Must have agility and balance to safely climb on/off all equipment.
  • Must be able to occasionally bend, twist, squat and climb, including ability to ascend and descend ladders and stairs.
  • Must be able to lift arms above shoulder for pulling and pushing.
  • Must have a good sense of direction and ability to read and understand a map.
  • Must be free of any mental, nervous, organic, or functional disease or psychiatric disorder likely to interfere with ability to drive a commercial vehicle safely.
  • Must have mental acuity sufficient to make sound decisions quickly in confusing and critical situations.

DRIVER HIRE AND RETENTION GUIDELINES

  1. Must be a minimum of 22 years of age and qualified to haul interstate loads.
  2. Must have a Class “A” CDL with doubles endorsements.
  3. Must complete an application for employment.  
  4. Must provide a DMV record of driving history that is not older than 30 days.
    1. No DUI and/or reckless driving violations with a violation date within the last 3 years.
    2. No open Failure to Appear on driving record.
    3. Any accidents within the last 3 years must be accompanied with a collision report as issued by the law enforcement department that wrote the report. 
      1. IF no report exist, must provide statement of fault and accident details from insurance company.
    4. Printout must show that medical long form is on file with the DMV.
    5. No more than 2 points according to the California DMV on your driving record for the past 12 months or no more than 3 points for the past 24 months.
  5. Must have taken and passed all required DOT drug/alcohol screens within the past 3 years.
  6. Must present valid medical card.
  7. Must successfully complete an interview and Company administered road test (new hires only).

Once employed, drivers must maintain an acceptable driving record that meets the following guidelines below:

  1. Must take and pass all required DOT drug/alcohol screens.
  2. No DUI and/or reckless driving violations, while working or not.
  3. Any Failure to Appear violations must be eliminated from their record prior to license suspension date.
  4. No more than 3 points according to the California DMV on your driving record for the past 12 months or no more than 4.5 points for the past 24 months.
  5. If a driver is involved in an accident in a vehicle outside of work, he/she must turn in a collision report issued by law enforcement.
